Nitrous Oxide (RA) Sedation for Endodontic Treatment
Helping You Feel More Relaxed During Treatment
At North Terrace Endodontics, we understand that having root canal treatment can feel daunting. We now offer nitrous oxide sedation, also known as relative analgesia (RA) or “happy gas”, to help suitable patients feel calmer during their appointment.
What Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
Nitrous oxide sedation involves breathing a carefully controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small mask placed over your nose. It helps reduce anxiety while you remain awake and able to communicate with your endodontist.
Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the tooth and surrounding tissues.
What Can I Expect?
You breathe normally through your nose as the sedation is gradually introduced. You may notice a feeling of relaxation, warmth or light-headedness. The level of sedation can be adjusted throughout your treatment, and your response is monitored.
After treatment, you receive oxygen and are assessed before leaving. Our team will provide individual advice about recovery, driving and returning to your usual activities.
Is It Suitable for Me?
Nitrous oxide sedation may be an option if you feel anxious about dental treatment. Your endodontist will review your medical history, medications and treatment needs before recommending whether it is appropriate for you.
Please tell us if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, or if you have a cold or blocked nose before your appointment.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Some people experience temporary dizziness or light-headedness. Let your endodontist know if you feel uncomfortable at any stage. We will discuss the benefits, possible risks and alternatives with you before treatment.
